Beschreibung

Japanese wood joints connect timbers without nails, screws or metal fittings, the wood itself becomes the fastener. They are divided into tsugite, joints that extend a timber lengthwise, and shiguchi, joints that meet at an angle. The technique was developed above all in temple, shrine and house building. The Hōryū-ji temple, founded in 607, has some of the oldest surviving wooden buildings in the world. The advantage: wood moves with humidity and temperature, and these joints allow for that movement, spread the forces over large surfaces and can often be taken apart again. Today they are used in furniture making and wherever a joint should last and look beautiful at the same time. The work is done with a Japanese saw, chisels and planes.
