Beschreibung

Shoji are the sliding walls and doors of traditional Japanese architecture: a wooden frame with a fine lattice of kumiko, covered with thin, translucent paper. They divide rooms without closing them off and let soft, diffused light through. Because they slide, rooms can be opened up or divided as needed. The paper is traditionally attached with starch paste, which can later be loosened and renewed. Today shoji are also used here as room dividers, sliding doors, cabinet fronts or light objects. Building one teaches a lot about traditional wood joints, precise work and the effect of light.
